Mumbai Water Cut Alert By BMC: Is Your Area Affected?


The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a 10% water cut across Mumbai with effect from 15th May 2026. This decision, has been confirmed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, as a temporary precautionary measure so that existing water reserves last till the arrival of the monsoon expected in mid-August.

Announcement Details:


1. The Two-Day Water Supply Disruption


Purpose: To commission a new 1800-mm water tunnel at Amar Mahal.

Schedule: From 10.00 AM on 5th May 2026 till 4.00 PM on 6th May 2026.

Affected Areas: South and Central Mumbai, including Wards F/North (Wadala), F/South (Parel), L (Kurla), M/East (Govandi), M/West (Chembur), and N (Ghatkopar).

2. Long-Term Water Cut:


Date of Effect: On May 15th, 2026, the city-wide 10% water cut will begin.


Present Lake Water Levels: At the end of April 2026, the overall combined water levels of the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Bhatsa, Tulsi, & Vihar, Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna, have declined to about 28% approximately.


Reasons of Water Cut: The present water stocks are expected to last only till the first week of July 2026, in case if this proposed water cut is not implemented. This present water cut is being implemented to extend the water supply till the mid of August 2026.


Monsoon Forecast: As per the Forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) a potentially below-normal monsoon is expected in the year 2026 due to El Niño weather pattern, prompting stricter water management.


Other Recent & Scheduled Disruptions

In addition to the upcoming city-wide cut, several localized disruptions have been reported for infrastructure maintenance:

City-wide (April 20–27):

A temporary 5% water cut was implemented for essential maintenance on major water tunnels (AMT-1 and AMT-2)

South Mumbai (April 22–23):

An 18-hour disruption affected parts of wards A, B, C, E, and F-South for the installation of butterfly valves at Sewri.

Western Suburbs (March 28–29):

A 16-hour disruption previously affected Bandra, Khar, and Santacruz for pipeline commissioning. 

Residents are urged to use water sparingly & very judiciously, and store sufficient amounts of water during the period of water cut.

Is there any water problem in Mumbai?

Yes, there is a temporary water problem in Mumbai.
